Service Description

Child support is money that a parent is court-ordered to pay to their child's other parent or caregiver for the support of the child. Any parent or person with custody raising children in their home may apply for child support.

Services include help to:
- Find non-custodial parents
- Establish parentage (determine who is the father)
- Get child support orders from the court
- Set up medical support orders
- Collect current and past due support payments
- Review and modify court orders for support

A person can receive child support if -
- The person is a parent of a minor child or is the person who has court-ordered custody of a minor child
- The minor child lives in the person's household
- The child is financially dependent on that person
- One or both of the child's parents are absent from the home

Application Instructions

Call the county child support office to get a paper application for Full Child Support (IV-D) Services.
The application is available online at:

Families that receive public assistance, including: Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP), Medical Assistance (MA), MinnesotaCare, Diversionary Work Program (DWP), Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Title IV-E Foster Care, or Child Care Assistance;
when a parent lives away from the child's home, do not need to apply for services and there is no fee. The county financial worker will automatically refer the case for full child support enforcement services.


$25 application fee for families who are not on public programs
