Programs that provide support for battered women, sexual assault survivors and other victims of crimes by having a staff member go with them when they require a medical examination to gather evidence or need to visit a police station to file a complaint or appear in court to give evidence.

Programs that intercede on behalf of individuals to help them establish eligibility for or obtain needed services when they have been denied benefits or services for which they are eligible, when they need assistance to communicate their needs to a service provider or to otherwise effectively represent themselves, or when they have a complaint about a service. Individual advocacy attempts to reach equitable settlements without resorting to litigation and seeks to meet individual needs without attempting to change social institutions.

Programs that provide information and guidance and/or representation in court proceedings for individuals who have been abused in an intimate relationship and/or for people who are facing a summary conviction offence or criminal charge for perpetrating abuse. Included are domestic violence law clinics and other legal assistance programs that represent victims of domestic abuse at restraining order hearings or in other civil or criminal actions involving charges against an abuser. Most also represent the person's interests in complexities that arise as part of the legal process such as restitution, payment of debts or child support, custody and visitation and property control. Some programs may also represent victims of domestic abuse who have been charged with a crime and/or handle cases involving accusations of child abuse filed by one parent against the other, abuse of an elderly person by an adult child or abuse of an adult child by a parent.

Programs that maintain information about community resources that are appropriate for a specific target group or human services sector (for example, youth programs or addiction services) and which link individuals who are in need of specialized services with appropriate resources and/or which provide information about community agencies and organizations that offer specialized services.

Individuals who are generally between the ages of 18 and 25 depending on the ages that specific programs use for qualification.

Individuals whose nationality, ethnic background and cultural ancestry are those of one of the countries and peoples of the continent of Asia.

Individuals who are either citizens of one of the countries within Southeast Asia or who identify themselves as part of the Southeast Asian community which includes people from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Sultanate of Brunei, Thailand and Vietnam.

Individuals whose ethnic background and cultural ancestry identify them as part of the Hmong community. The Hmong live in a region within southern China, northern Vietnam and Laos. Their language is Hmong.

Individuals who reside in Karen State in southern and southeastern Myanmar (Burma), or who identify themselves as part of the Karen community. The term "Karen" is an umbrella term that refers to a heterogeneous lot of Sino-Tibetan speaking ethnic groups that do not share a common language, culture, religion or material characteristics. The Karen constitute the third largest ethnic population in Myanmar.

Individuals who are either citizens of Laos or who identify themselves as part of the Laotian community. Laos is a country in southeast Asia. The official language is Lao.

Individuals who are either citizens of Vietnam or who identify themselves as part of the Vietnamese community. Vietnam is a country in southeast Asia. The official language is Vietnamese.

Individuals (some with children) who are currently staying in a temporary shelter for people who are unable to return to their own homes due to domestic violence.

Adult women who have been subjected to a persistent pattern of physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse and intimidation by their husbands or intimate partners.
