Description
Swing Bed is the term Medicare uses to describe a hospital room that can switch from acute care (hospital) status to skilled care (nursing home) status. A Swing Bed is a bridge from the hospital to home or to long-term care.
Hospitals with Swing Beds participate in Medicare and are approved by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare established coverage for "swing beds" in order to serve the needs of smaller communities and hospitals. Medicare Certified Swing Bed services are only available in Critical Access Hospitals and smaller hospitals in rural areas where there is a shortage of long-term care beds.
A Swing Bed can be used to provide 24-hour skilled nursing care. Swing beds can also be used for individuals needing to rehabilitate from surgery, illness, or accident.

LL-3000.8300Swing Bed Care Facilities Definition
Health care facilities that are licensed for both acute care and skilled nursing, skilled rehabilitation and/or extended acute care, designate a specific number of beds as available for either acute care or long-term care, and have a program which allows patients to begin in acute care and then "swing" to another level of care at the direction of their physician without leaving the hospital. People who can benefit from a swing bed program include patients needing rehabilitative physical therapy services following orthopedic surgery, IV therapy, wound care treatment or restorative nursing procedures such as ostomy training; and may be routinely considered for patients who have hip or knee surgery. To qualify, patients must have a three-day acute level care stay within a 30 day period prior to requiring swing bed care. Swing bed care is covered by Medicare and many private insurance plans.
