Medicare Supplemental Insurance policies, also known as Medigap, are insurance policies that cover many out-of-pocket costs associated with Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copayments and coinsurance.
Medigap policies provide payment for costs not covered by Original Medicare Part A and B. They do not provide any Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). To get that coverage, a beneficiary needs to enroll in a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan.
There are different types of Medicare Supplemental Plans (Medigap):
* Extended Basic
* Medicare Supplement Alpha Plans (F, K, L, M and N)
More information about Medicare Supplemental policies can be found in the Minnesota Board on Aging's Health Care Choices for Minnesotans on Medicare: http://www.mnhealthcarechoices.com
- Older adults
Generally, Medicare Supplemental policy purchases are available without health screening within six months of enrollment in Medicare Part B.
Complete an application with the insurance company or agent.
Monthly premiums vary according to policy and company selected.
