Description
The Minnesota Department of Health lists hospitals that have different levels of services for people who are having or are recovering from a stroke.
The designations are:
* Comprehensive Stroke Center: This hospital has the personnel, infrastructure and expertise to diagnose and treat stroke patients who require intensive medical and surgical care, specialized tests or interventional therapies.
* Primary Stroke Center: This hospital has the necessary staffing, infrastructure and programs to stabilize and treat most acute stroke patients.
* Acute Stroke Ready Hospital: This hospital or 24/7 emergency center has the infrastructure and capability to care for acute stroke, including administration of intravenous thrombolytic therapy (also known as tissue plasminogen activator "tPA," or alteplase).

Multidisciplinary programs that combine the resources of physical, occupational and speech therapists to help individuals who have been disabled by a stroke recover their mobility and ability to communicate or develop alternative approaches or skills. Therapy focuses on helping patients to recover physical strength and control; improve their balance; relearn or replace basic motor skills that are needed for dressing, shaving, housekeeping and other activities of daily living; and overcome expressive and receptive language problems or develop alternatives.
