Description
Any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
It can be acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized.
More information can be found in the CBSM Manual.
Effective assessments consider factors such as the person's abilities, limitations, preferences, and goals, alongside environmental and task-related factors by:
* Identifying the individual's needs and abilities
* Exploring potential assistive technology solutions
* Matching the solutions to the person's tasks and goals
* Trialing and refining the selected assistive technology options
Additional Information
Helps people with disabilities use assistive technology to eliminate barriers. Services include:
* Assessments to determine the assistive technology needs and preferences
* Training and one-on-one support
* Lending and Demonstration Library to try out assistive technology devices at home or work for 30 days
* Demonstrations about the types and uses of assistive technology
* Helps design and build affordable ramps
When a person is ready to buy a device, staff can help to identify and work with potential sellers and funding.
About This Location
Services may include:
* Assessments to match a person's needs, abilities, and tasks with the right combination of no-tech, low-tech, and high-tech tools, including software
* Equipment rental during a trial period, customization, training and technical assistance
* Maintenance, repair of devices and rental of equipment during repairs
* Device selection help from available options
* Ongoing training and evaluation about the device for the person and their caregivers

Consumer controlled, community based, cross disability, nonresidential agencies designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities that provide an array of independent living services. All CILs provide five core services: information and referral, independent living skills training, peer counseling, individual and systems advocacy and transition.
